Youth employment and youth homelessness
The 2018 National Employment Solutions Conference will be held at Twin Towns Services Club, Tweed Heads, NSW this month over the 8th – 9th October.
The conference provides the opportunity to be involved through presenting, learning, engaging, networking and collaborating with other professionals within the employment sector.
Joining us at the conference is Ms Zoe Robinson, CEO at Yfoundations who will present on ‘Youth employment and youth homelessness – we know they are related – how can we create opportunity’.
It is vital that all young people are given the opportunity to attain their educational and employment aspirations. Education and training are crucial to the growth and development of a young person and promotes financial independence and social stability. Education and training including school-based learning, vocational training and life skills improves the self-confidence and resilience of a young person, while ensuring they have the necessary skills and knowledge to engage in, and be competitive within the workforce.
The ability to build a pathway out of homelessness for young people involves giving them opportunities to find their independence, to learn vital life skills and to obtain work. It is not easy to do so and at times employers do not understand that. The need to provide a permanent address can be a hurdle for a young person getting a job.
Organisations run youth training programs – we need to think about who we target and why we target them. We need to understand that young people who are homeless do not “hope” to stay homeless. They hope for much more and we just need to provide them with opportunities to achieve, and step outside the box.
Zoe Robinson is the newly appointed CEO of Yfoundations. Zoe has worked in the private sector as a lawyer and for Deloitte in National Strategy. Now in her role as CEO of Yfoundations she passionately advocates for young people who have experienced, or are experiencing, homelessness. One of the 5 foundations of Yfoundations is education and employment and we know that these are pathways out of homelessness and into independence and importantly wellbeing. We are excited and actively engaging with organisations to help them understand the benefit to engaging young people early.
