Long-term Unemployment causes consequences solutions
Unemployment causes consequence solutions will be discussed at the Long Term Unemployment Conference. This conference will focus on Long Term Unemployment where there is persisent level of unemployment greater than 1 year or even 2 years. The conference will address those who have been unemployed for over 5 years, the very long term unemployed (VLTU). It will also address issues around disengagement where the unemployed are no longer seeking employment. The other types of unemployment – cyclical, structural, short-term and frictional unemployment will be discussed in relation to long term unemployment.
We will address the causes of Long Term Unemployment with focus on multiple barriers to employment, global issues and specific issues in relation to at risk groups such as: |mature age | youth | indigenous |regional |rural |CALD| migrants| ex-offenders| drug/alcohol| mental health|
The consequences of long term unemployment (LTU) is can have a disastrous effects on individuals who suffer it both in terms of their decreased labour market opportunities and their general physical and mental well-being. Some job seekers become disengaged with the workforce and no longer participate. There are health, social, economic and employment policy and practices implications from the consequences of long term unemployment. At a national and international level on living standards and competitiveness through lower tax revenue with flow onto supply/demand impacts on healthcare and education expenditure. At an individual level the consequence of long term unemployment on health and mental well being can be compounded by: depression; anxiety; drug and alcohol issues; and social disadvantages. Intergeneration disadvantage and unemployment is also a risk. The long term unemployed may be face discriminatation as they are screened out of jobs as the longer someone is unemployed, the more likely that employers will see them as unemployable.
